2018 Carols Event Review

The carols in Yarra Glen are a much anticipated whole community event, we are excited to find in the crowd, along with the locals, people who have traveled for an hour to be there and have our carols in their calendar as a part of their regular Christmas traditions.

The 2018 Carols was an interesting event, with rain pouring down for the week prior and the morning before, it looked like the whole thing would need to be cancelled. But with determination, many churches praying and the willingness of the sound and lighting team to set up in wet weather we were able to go ahead. Surprisingly even with the forecast report looming the crowd continued to grow to our regular approximate of 1,500!

We are very blessed to have Life Ministry Church from Chirnside Park play as our main carols band. They have a beautiful modern sound, a wide range of instruments and are a truly talented bunch of people! We have guest singers bring high quality performances, they sing a Christmas song of their choice, many of these singers have volunteered their time to sing in Yarra Glen for many years, these songs are spread throughout the night along with the traditional carols. We also have performances from the local primary school, kindergarten and a dance performance by our local ballet school. The CFA brings the fire truck and Santa, who gives each child a bag of chocolate from the local Chocolatrie. This event also takes the whole community to run!!

For 2018 we intended to share a Christmas Story of Love through a narrated sand animation, but the weather turned just after half way through the night and we had to finish for the safety of the performers and because the crowd had partially dispersed. .

2019, will be a special event, Chapliancy Australia and our MC have volunteered their time at our Christmas Carols for 10 years this year and they would like to be involved in the planning of a pre- carols event, exciting times! Christmas Carols events are a wonderful way to bring a community together, from local businesses donating financially or by volunteering, local community groups running sausage sizzles all the way to the families that gather together on the lawn.

Ethical Fashion Night

Heartland-Ethical-Fashion-Night-Flyer-Development-01

Heartland Church will be hosting a Clothes Swap on Wednesday the 25th of July from 7pm – 9pm in the Mc Coombe room at the Yarra Glen Memorial Hall.

A clothes swap is an event where people have the opportunity to free themselves from any unwanted clothes in their wardrobe and replace them with something they like better!

Basically as you enter the Hall there will be a table where you can present your goods to be donated and they will be checked over by one of the team members to see if they are of good quality (no holes or stains please!). Then you will be given additional tokens according to the quantity of clothing which you donate,  you will keep your tokens while you listen to a presentation from our guest speaker Mark Purser from Baptist World Aid. Mark will be explaining how Baptist World Aid has developed the Ethical Fashion Guide and how it is making a difference in communities around the world. If you don’t have any clothes to donate you will just have your three tokens from the $5 entry fee.

Following the presentation we will have a raffle and the Clothes Swap will begin! You will be able to choose clothing in exchange for your tokens, extra tokens will also be available at the cost of $2 each from the table in the entry.

Finger food will be served at this time.

If you would like to donate clothing prior to the event please contact Sally by email sally@glen.org.au

All money collected on the night through entry fee, extra token purchases and raffle entries will go towards the work of Baptist World Aid.

Clothes Swaps are a fun way to find new clothes while spending time with friends and the community without hurting our planet or it’s people. We hope you can come!!

Heartland’s new ministry

Community development ministry exists for people within the Yarra Glen and surrounding community, to help all members of the community reach their potential. This ministry is expandable and can bring new programs and service to the community as needs arise.

Currently the projects that Heartland is undertaking are:

Reluncheonships

Every first Sunday of the month Heartland shares a meal together at each others homes, rather than meeting at the Memorial Hall. On these Sunday’s people offer to host and a few guests are invited around for a meal, catch up and a short Bible study discussion. Reluncheonships are designed to build relationships amongst the current Heartland community and provides a welcoming environment to invite other friends to. If you are planning on visiting on a 1st Sunday please contact us to join a Reluncheonship meal.

Serving service

Heartland usually gathers on a Sunday morning at the Memorial Hall at 10 am, now when there is a 5th Sunday in a month, the Church will be doing a practical service somewhere in the community, this could include activities like working bees or cooking a meal together to share with people in need. If you would like Heartland to assist you in a practical way please contact us and let us know.

Community Events

Heartland has been organising community events since 2006. The most recent community event Heartland was involved in was the Yarra Glen Carols by Candlelight.

Courses

Courses are a great way to develop peoples skills and relationships, when people have the opportunity to broaden their skill set they make theirs and others lives better. Courses will be open to all people in our community and will run on a regular basis. Courses Heartland has previously run are No Apologies by Focus on the Family and Youth Alpha. Currently we are planning on running the Alpha Marriage Course for more information visit our Local Events section.
